Black Forest Slash-Mulch Committee
"The Black Forest Slash-Mulch Program is a Wildfire Mitigation and Recycling Program. It is co-sponsored by the Black Forest Fire Department, in cooperation with the Colorado State Forest Service and the State Board of Land Commissioners and the El Paso County Solid Waste Management Division.The Black Forest Slash-Mulch Program exists to promote the common good and general welfare of the Black Forest Community and surrounding area [“surrounding area” meant to be deliberately vague]."
The Slash Mulch group consists of 2610 volunteers who have signed up to work at the site. They work a 2 1/2 to 4 hour shifts helping those who come to the Site. Most, but not all, live in the Black Forest area.
The "Committee" consists of 4 members acting as the Board of Directors elected by the group of members known as Site Bosses (current count 24). A Site Boss is a volunteer who has worked enough shifts to be in charge of a shift.
The "Board" oversees the day to day operation of the program, scheduling, finance and maintenance. The Site Boss logs attendance and supervises of the rest of the crew for the shift and is the go to person if a problem arises. A "Crew" is 3 to 7 other volunteers.
* NOTE * Everyone who works at the site is a volunteer - unpaid - we are just members (for lack of a better word) that sign up to help our nighbours.
=================================================
What do we do? Well, 1 volunteer greets incoming loads at the front gate, hands out literature and collects $2. We do a cursory check of the load (no weeds, no lumber, no stumps etc) and direct the load to the north side (pickups) or the south side (trailers). On both sides we have 2 or 3 volunteers to help the loads back in to an open space. Depending on how busy we are the volunteers may help unload. But at a minimum they check each load closely for items we don't accept. On Saturday there is one person at the exit gate to collect the $5 loader fee. We also visit with everybody and have a good time.
