Ponderosa Pine Needles
Are worth their weight in gold not only for mulch but for the survival
of the host tree. Needles contain the minerals the host tree
needs to live.
Leave a 3-inch layer, 5-feet away from foundations and it will provide warmth, food,
moisture, a protective shield, will slow erosion, shelter some beneficial creatures for plants, will
enhance the soil, and add an aesthetic touch to the environment.
Needles are part of the life of a Ponderosa but too many needles cause trouble
for the host tree and forest health. Remove some of them when the depth is 5-inches or more.
